Dress Your Room to Impress with Accents

December 26, 2016 2 min read

So, you’ve reached the inevitable and futile conclusion that your room could do with a little redecorating. It’s not a conclusion you like to admit or accept, but it’s the truth. The carpet is looking a little bit blah, the walls are looking plain, but you don’t know what to do. If you don’t want to replace all of your furniture pieces, the best thing you can do is add some accents. A mirror, a colorful rug, even some textured or decorative pillows will liven your space. If you have an important event coming up, and you want to impress your guests, accents will definitely leave a positive impression. If you don’t know a thing about accents, or how to use them effectively, this article will teach you how. And don’t worry, it’s not that hard to learn.

What are Accents?

They are the stars in the night sky, the necklace or pair of shoes that ties an outfit together, the star at the top of the Christmas tree: these are accents. They are the things that stand out and make something plain or boring look interesting. You can add accents to all of the rooms in your house, including your living room and kitchen.

Accent Ideas

  • Pillows and Rugs -- Probably the easiest option are rugs and pillows. They are inexpensive and easy to replace if they get dirty. A patterned rug will make your carpets or hardwood floors lively again. Brightly colored pillows, or even ones with inspirational words will brighten your couches and mid century furniture.
  • Mirrors -- These are great because they give the illusion of added space. Mirrors are wonderful because they come in so many different designs and sizes. You don’t need to stick to a full length mirror. A few mirror pieces on the wall will dazzle your guests.
  • Portraits and Murals -- Whether it be something you painted yourself or a print you fell in love with at the store, paintings and murals are wonderful accent pieces. They don’t even have to be a painting, as some people hang up embroidery pieces or even clothes as works of art. Posters and photographs can also be used. The options here are endless!
  • Lamps -- As light helps us see, it would make sense to make lamps accent pieces. Whether it be a small desk lamp that sits on a nightstand, or one that sits in the corner, lamps are pivotal for lighting up any room.
